Decorating Candles...?

While spending time with Justin's family I found that decorating candles is a yearly tradition around Thanksgiving. This is his mom's doing from what I understand, and I will admit being skeptical beforehand. But once I sat down and started to play with the different lace and ribbon, I actually enjoyed myself. It also gave me time for some additional 'family bonding' without Justin being around, which was probably good.

Apple Pie

I am not a big sweets person, but I adore Pie. Apple and Pumpkin being my favorites! Well, on this Thanksgiving trip with Justin's family I have had the great joy to have both! Even though I was sick and couldn't gorge myself like I normally do on Thanksgiving, I did make sure that both Pies were enjoyed... The pumpkin pie was his grandmother's and the Apple (shown below) was 'favorite Aunt Barbie's famous apple pie'...

Geocaching

Today after a very Yummy (if not fully enjoyed, due to me being ill) Turkey Dinner we (Justin, Em, Chris, Harry, and myself) went Geocaching. This was actually really kinda enjoyable, in a slightly dorky way. But I loved it. Justin and I took a GeoCoin. Basically it is a coin that you can track and see where its been and where it goes. You take it and move it to another cache. I found one will place it in a new cache in GA. I am looking forward to it.

Thanksgiving

I am spending Thanksgiving this year with my boyfriend's family in Florida. So far the trip has been fun and relaxing, although I am not feeling %100. Tomorrow on top of the standard turkey and family time that come with Thanksgiving, there was also talk to geocaching. I have never done this, but I think it sounds like loads of fun. And I will be keeping my camera close at hand for the trip, so pictures will follow.

I found this series on Vanity Fair online called 'Portraits of Korengal' by Tim Hetherington. It is portraits of soldiers. I think it is pretty impressive. Each photo seems to have a different feel and look. I wish I could pull off this kind of unique and moving photography.

I think it actually turned out really nice looking with the tree and lighting. I plan on doing some editing to it later. For now, this is straight out of the camera. Yesterday Jenni was shooting a faux wedding with Mike and Tiff as models. She was talking to some potential clients about shooting some weddings, but they wanted to see some of her work... Since she hasn't done a wedding yet, it was hard to show something she had not done, so she dressed up friends and made them pretend it was their happy day and now she has something to show potential clients in the future. Yay!

So, we are working right through getting the Holiday Portraits done in Advanced Portraiture. Tiffany, Ze, Amanda and I all worked really hard putting felt dots on the giant box to cover up painted dots that weren't looking so great. Afterward Brett added trim and Debra added a bow to make it look much better.

So, today me and Chelsea and Ze installed the wood flooring for the Gwinnett Tech Holiday Portraits set this year. It was actually tons of fun. Very few accidents, though Chelsea bleed a bit for the cause. We got it done in no time and the set looks like it is coming together... a little... Well, it will get there, no worries.

All I really think I want out of life is to travel, see the world and show it through my camera. I love the idea of going to a new place and photographing the people and culture. I have mixed intreats in photojournalism and portraiture. My dream job would a combination of both I guess. I found a video with some great picture of Vietnam and its people. Kind of reminds me what I want to do and what I am reaching towards.

Shepard Fairey

I am a bit upset by the fact that Shepard Fairey would take a photo (by Mannie Garcia) to create a, now know to the world, Obama poster. I liked the image, but was not pleased by the copy right issue that followed when he was sued by AP for taking the shot directly from Garcia's image. However, I was even more appalled when reading a recent PDN article to learn that he would fabricate evidence to try and make it not look as bad on him... Which only made him look worse. He did look a bit better for coming out with a statement about the whole thing on his website... But still does not make me feel comfy about people stealing photos.

I found a wonderful artist Judith Fox the other day. I am fascinated with her documentary series of her husband. He is struggling with Alzheimer's and she wanted to show how he was changing. I think it is really inspirational. She didn't have to search for something to shoot, it was right there in her own home. I love her and want to get her book, I still do.. Loving and living with Alzheimer's.

So, Saturday was my birthday and one of my presents was a trip to Florida and University of Florida Gator Experience! I got the whole Gator experience including (but not limited to): the Gator Growl, tailgating, and checking out the band warm up before the game. Then the big part, the game itself, which was awesome! Of course my trusty, lovely camera was not too far from my side the whole day. Since birthdays usually suck for me, this was a great surprise. A good birthday! Here are some shots from the day:

Low Key Shoot

Today in Advanced Portraiture we were doing either High Key or Low Key shoots. I decided to shot my sister in a low key setting. She didn't start out as a doll, but kind of ended up that way. It worked though because she is so pale she practically glows, so it kind of gave her a porcelain doll vibe. It was really fun because we are always really goofy when we are around each other.

I recently read an article on PDN about photographer Lu Guang. I found him really fascinating upon further inspection of his work. His work is the work I would love to do one day. I love his documentary style of photojournalism and his want to make the authorities see what is wrong in the work. I think he is amazing and can't wait to find more of his work.

Retouching

I really enjoyed an assignment form a privous quarter where we were learning about retouching. I like portraits and loving the idea of taking them to another level. I did this one of my sister Tiffany. I was throughly pleased with the out come.

This is the initial image. Other than the subject, nothing really special about it. It's kind of flat and a bit boring.

I started by doing basic retouching, airbrishing, and a touch of sharpening to make her look flawless.

Then, I adjusted it with curves, levels, hue/saturation, and selective color to really make her pop.

I plan on playing with images from other model shoots I did and when I do I will post the results.

I just found Lillian Bassman and love what she did with female models and fashion shots in the 5o's. She has an interesting view and I love the way the black and white images really set the mood. Very romantic.

Wish list: Telephoto Lens

I am really interested in sports photography. I don't know how good I am, but I plan on practicing and can hopefully hone the skill. If it is something I end up pursuing, then I will deffinately need a better lens. If I were serious about sports photography as a career and I really needed it, then I would want a 600mm lens with a 2.8 apurture. But I think that the AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G ED VR lens would also be a nice addition to my camera bag either way.

Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar

I am really interested in Photojournalism, so I am really excitied about the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar that will be happening Dec. 3-5, 2009. My photojournalism teacher mentioned that some students might be working it, but that she is going to choose them based on who she sees as having a serious interested in photojournalism. I am going to have to try and show that I am interested because the experience I could gain from being around all those photojournalist would be priceless. If I don't get my teachers aproval and she doesn't pick me to go, then I am going to go on my own and see the lectures and work. Either way I am looking forward to it. Chick it out!

Artist Lectures

This weekend seems to be a big weekend for Atlanta Celebrates Photography. There are a lot of show openings and fun photography things happening. There are two lectures that I am dying to go to... Unfortunately, I am going to be out of town this weekend for my birthday. In leu of attending myself I am going to be inviting others to go in my absence.

The first is a lecture by Steve McCurry. He is probably best know for the Afgan girl picture from National Geographic. The lecture is Friday, October 16, 2009 from 7pm to 9pm. It will be at Besharat Gallery; 175 Peters St. SW, Atlanta, GA 30131.

The other one is Julie Marateck, who is showing nine 30x50 enviromental shots to support living a green life. It will be the same night at Emerging Art Scene at The Stacks; 170 Boulevard Ave., E-119 (By Apartment M-F), Atlanta, GA, 30312. The lecture will be from 7pm-9pm as well.

So pick one and enjoy it for me!

The Making of the Blog Banner!

For an assignment I had to make a banner for my blog. I decided to use an image I shot recently that had colors that reminded me of my blog. I thought I would give a rundown of what I did to get from the original image to the finished product, which is now housed in the top left of my lovely blog.

The original image was slightly tilted and way too wide to fit my banner spot.

I started out by straightening out the tilt, then cropped the image to a size I thought would work for the space.

Then I turned the whole image black and white, masked out the doors to add a pop of color, and adjusted the color of the doors a little to better match the color of my blog.

I liked the wires hanging across the frame, but found that they were going to go right through the area I planned on placing text. So, I took them out using the clone stamp and healing brush.

Then I added text, so people will know where they are at when they arrive on my page.

Everything here was done in Photoshop.

Sports Photography (1st Attempt...)

Two weekends ago I went out to shoot a sport feature for my photojournalism class. I shot my bosses' Cricket game. I am really interested in shooting sports. I think it would be a really interesting and fun experience. The assignment is due tomorrow and I am not 100% satisfied with my shot, but I don't hate it. I do plan on going out a week from Friday to shoot a football game for the high school I graduated from. I am really looking forward to trying a more aggressive, fast paced game. If I get a good shot then I can always turn it in for a re-do if this initial picture bombs.

Children's Portrait

Today in Advanced Portraiture we did children's portraits. I shot the cutest little girl Makayla. She was really hyper and almost too much for me at times, but she had been in front of a camera before and she adored the multi-colored polka dotted umbrella. She gave me a lot of really good stuff to work with and luckily calmed down a little during the shoot.

I am really lucky I had her to shoot today. I have to give a big shout out to Ciara for bring her and for suggesting her. Thanks a bunch!

Covington

I did some shooting around the square the other day when it was stormy outside. (The funny thing is I don't think I have ever shot there when it was sunny and nice. I will have to do that soon.) The lighting wasn't great and the idea was to get really moody shots with the clouds... Well, the clouds were just gray blobs, not the right kind of moody, so that didn't work out how I would have liked it too... And the pictures are not really all that moody either. Maybe a little moody, but not enough. But I did like how a few came out, so here they are:

Today I went out to shoot in the rain after work. There is a bridge near where I live that can flood when it starts to rain, so I thought I would check it out. Turns out there wasn't enough water to flood it, but it did have a nice steady flow going, which is rare. Here are some of the best shots (I think) I got. Enjoy!

Artist Hightlight: Youssef Nabil

I was recently introduced to Youssef Nabil, a photographer from Cairo, Egypt. I am fascinated by his work. He was inspired by old Egyptian films and the glamor he saw in them. Since he left Cairo and is now based mainly out of New York and Paris he has done many self portraits to illustrate his distance from him home country.

He uses an interesting process of hand coloring gelatin silver prints. Color is added to black and white photos by hand using a variety of different techniques, such as watercolor or other paints and different dyes.

I adore the almost dream like quality to his work. This inspires me to try it out as well. I sadly missed the opportunity to go to a lecture he was having yesterday and am sorely disappointed. The colors in his prints are so vivid and intriguing. Once I have the chance to try this out myself I will post my results. Hopefully it will be soon. Pet Photography

On Tuesday we had to do pet photography for our Advanced Portraiture class. I shot my cat Shino. Though he no longer lives with me I still consider him mine. There was only one other girl shooting a cat that day, which was probably due to the fact that my teacher is highly allergic to them, so we were in a room on the other side of the building.

The shot was just a trunk, a fuzzy throw blanket and some old wood nailed to a 1x4. Pretty simple setup. This is a shot of the scene:

Shino started out pretty well behaved. He was curious about the room and not pleased with the drive and it was hard to get him to stay on the set.

Kala, who was there to shoot a cat as well, was really helpful in keeping Shino's attention.

I got a couple of shots where he was well behaved and on set.

And once he calmed down and got a little sleepy, he was really easy to shoot and handle... Though his eyes kept closing and I had to keep perking him up to get the shot.

All in all it was a fun experience. I think I learned a lot. I didn't think pet photography was going to be simple, but it wasn't too hard. I guess it would depend on the animal though.
